The Twelve Message Hexagrams (十二消息卦) reveal one of the I Ching's deepest insights: life unfolds in rhythmic cycles rather than moving in a straight line. Through the seasonal growth and decline of Yang (息, Xi) and Yin (消, Xiao), they illustrate that every beginning contains the seed of its ending, and every ending carries the promise of a new beginning. The Twelve Message Hexagrams

十二消息卦 (Shí'èr Xiāo Xī Guà)

Definition

Also known as the Twelve Sovereign Hexagrams (十二辟卦 Shí'èr Bì Guà), these twelve hexagrams correspond to the twelve lunar months and illustrate the cyclical waxing and waning of Yin (阴 Yīn) and Yang (阳 Yáng).

• Xi 息 (Xī): Yang grows while Yin recedes.
• Xiao 消 (Xiāo): Yang declines while Yin increases.

Together they form a core symbolic system of the I Ching (易经 Yìjīng), describing the rhythm of growth, prosperity, decline, and renewal.

Rule of Change: Transformation proceeds from the bottom upward; change begins at the foundation before becoming visible.

Philosophical Insight: Things reverse at their extremes. After 乾卦 Qian comes 姤卦 Gou; after 坤卦 Kun comes 复卦 Fu. Prosperity contains the seed of decline, and decline gives birth to renewal.
